WAGYU & GRASS-FED BEEF

American Waygu Beef – What is it?

Purebred Wagyu are crossed with traditional breeds to create American Wagyu Beef. The result is a perfect blend of famous Wagyu buttery marbling and the robust flavor that American beef is known for.

It is the best of both worlds.

We breed out Angus (Black and Red) to Waygu Bulls. This produces a naturally more efficient and productive animal based on hi bred vigor (the offspring retain the best of both worlds genetically).

According to Rekha Mankad, M.D. from Mayo Clinic;

"Grass-fed beef may have some heart-health benefits that other types of beef don't have. When compared with other types of beef, grass-fed beef may have:

  • Less total fat
  • More heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids
  • More conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat that's thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risks
  • More antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin E"

Grass-Fed Beef – What is it?

Our Grass-fed beef comes from beef cows that live 24 hours on the range from birth to market.  They have a large variety of natural growing forages (No GMO’s) to select from and plenty of room to socialize and enjoy the South Dakota Fresh Air and Water.  We do supplement local hay in the winter to keep our herd warm and healthy, we have cut our hay consumption by 25% and are trying to do more winter grazing.  We do not use hormones so our feeders (beef) don’t mature as fast as others which can take up to 200 days longer than a commercial fed diet to achieve the same weight.  This added time does add cost to our quality product.  We believe you are getting what you pay for and we try to focus on quality 1st than quantity….

We believe our cows are happier on the range and produce a great product due to the low stress environment they grow up in.  Additionally we do not commercially spray our pastures and only use spot spraying for invasive weed infestations when they occur (rare when you have healthy soils).  We are continuing to research natural ways such as using nature to enhance our soil and grass production by introducing other teams to support or grazing operations such as sheep to graze other forage cows do not prefer, weed beetles, dung beetles, fly wasps, essential oils, herbs and other bio controls to help manage weeds, bugs,  and improve soil health.

We are also working with professionals in the industry to formulate natural supplements such as sea salt, natural minerals, and trace minerals to improve the animals well being and our end product.  Remember that Beef in general is a very efficient an excellent Vitamin and Protein source and their are many ways to produce the end product!

Is grass-fed beef better for me?

In general, the meat contains more heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids and essential vitamins, think of it as a natural multi vitamin and protein source.  Beef is a great fuel source for your engine and think of it as gasoline, obviously there are different grades of fuel what do you want your engine running on?

Our cows are very healthy and do not have as an immediate need for antibiotics, hormones, or steroids anything else besides fresh air, clean water, and great grass!

Are grass-fed cows treated better?

In our opinion they are! The process of home raising a beef throughout the life cycle minimizes stress on the individual by maintaining social groups, familiar faces, smells and everything that goes into growing up at home!   We know this helps produce a more enjoyable product. Please note the Beef industry as a whole is doing great things to improve animal welfare and maintain productive and safe environments for aspects of the supply chain!

In addition to great feed our cows get lots of fresh air, fresh water, social time, and exercise which is no secret to anyone and key to animals health.  This can apply to our species as well to maximize the potential god gave us.  Society today has a great challenge more than ever to stay healthy (mentally, physically, and spiritually). Our “unhealthy” life styles are paralyzing our minds, bodies, and souls and creating a wide variety of plagues that are self-inflected infections that could easily be managed through good foods, good sleep, good exercise, and a positive mindset.  We need to address the causes not the symptoms! Start by eating good quality food!

Their are many producers (locally and commercially) out their who are making sure their Animals and Environment are handled and cared for correctly!

Is grass-feeding better for the environment?

We are striving to connect the life cycle of life and our ecosystem through our grass harvesters just as the millions of Bison did for thousands of years in our region.   From planting new seed with hoof action to maximizing our solar grass gains from healthy soils and grass to product quality proteins sources.   We continue to try to work with nature and not fight it.   There are current studies going on that are proving that proper range management can lead to harvesting of Carbon and storing it in the soil (see links below).  Our cows truly harvest solar powered feed in a sense and produce a very efficient food source in doing so.   There are more and more studies online about the detriments to not grazing and letting grass actually drive out diversity and reverse soil health.  Additionally if grass is not grazed and recycled, it dies than bio degrades and produces carbon any how, so why not produce healthy natural food sources that improve our ecosystem for generations to come!

Studies and partnerships with the Audubon society, State Game and Fish, and World Wildlife fund are developing programs to produce better environments and habitats for birds and animals as well.

From the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink, there are lots of Ranchers and Farmers who are producing great products efficiently with the care of the animals and land at the forefront of their operations.

Do you really buy locally produced goods or just play keyboard commando because it sounds good?
