Our Beef with a Background has a unique history that dates back to the late 1800’s. As referenced in a book written by the First Lady of the Black Hills, Annie Tallent.

In her book, The Black Hills Or Last Hunting Grounds Of The Dakotas, Annie writes of the first homesteaders to the Black Hills and our ranch. She also narrates a story about the “Montana Herd“  which was the 1st animal operation run on the ranch by Michael Burton, the original Homesteader of our ranch. The MB Brand is owned and still in use by the ranch today.

One of the most famous stories recounted in her book was of a horse raid on the land where we now raise our cattle. As described in the book, 100 horses were stolen from the corals at the current ranch; resulting in the death of 5 men. The raiding party and a stampede of horses went towards deadwood then split off. Approximately 60 ran all the way to Deadwood; some right down main street. This raid was also the reason Rev. Henry Weston, “Preacher Smith”, was killed. There is a historical marker describing his death on Highway 85 just a few miles between the ranch and Deadwood.
